• What is the LAX Ball Dr. Pro?
  

The LAX Ball Dr. Pro is first and only real solution to refurbishing Lacrosse balls.  It will refurbish up to 10 balls in as little as 1 minute. And you can refurbish a ball up to 30 times and it is still in NOCSAE specifications.

• We spent over a year researching lacrosse balls, from how they were made, to what causes them to become slick.  From all the research we had done, we feel we have become experts in “lacrosse ballology”. This is a word we made up since we believe we are the first to do this type of research.
  
  Up to now, the solutions to refurbish lacrosse balls have ranged from rubbing toothpaste over the ball, to soaking them in a pool for 24 hours and to soaking the ball in harsh chemicals. We tried them all, and they just didn’t work. We did find a method that worked from a school that engineered a sandblasting method that was ingenious but the cost was over $500 and took 3-5 minutes to refurbish just one ball.  This obviously was not very efficient. One other method that worked, but was not efficient, was dragging the lacrosse balls over concrete.  Oddly enough we found out that many schools and universities would have their players drag the teams lacrosse balls on the sidewalk to rough up the lacrosse balls.  While this works, it is very time consuming and takes the ball out-of-round not to mention bloody knuckles.
  

• How did you get the idea?

My brother and I sat down in 2010 and decided to focus our efforts to come up with the best way to fix this problem.  We knew this would not be easy since there hasn’t been a real solution to this problem.  We went on the internet to see what had already been done and if we could improve on any ideas.  After Googling, looking on blogs and various other websites, we found that there really wasn’t solutions that worked.  

We then set out to find a solution on our own.  We looked at the chemical options, to abrasive solutions to fix the problem.  We built various prototypes that failed. This process took about 8 months before we came up with our current solution.  The biggest hurdle was finding away to over come the torque and power that was needed to spin the disc and to be able refurbish 10 balls at one time with out overworking and overheating the motor. Frankly the answer we found was nothing short of genius. In the summer of 2011 we came up with our final prototype the we now call the LAX Ball Dr. Pro.  The LAX Ball Dr. Pro. has a motor that experiences virtually no torque or overworking during the process of refurbishing up to 10 lacrosse balls at once. This allows the motor to stay cool and last for years of use.  

When we ran the LAX Ball Dr. Pro for first time the result exceeded our expectations. The lacrosse balls came out perfect, LIKE NEW! That is when we realized we really have something.  We quickly called our patent attorney and submitted our patent.

Last spring (2012) began selling the LAX Ball Dr. Pro to various local high school and college programs in our area. With a lot feedback we continued to make some minor improvements.  We took the LAX Ball Dr. Pro to the Blue Chip 225 camp at Bryant University during the summer of 2012. While the LAX Ball Dr. Pro was initially met with some logical skepticism, after seeing it work, the head coach for Bryant University (Mike Pressler) said, “Do whatever it takes, but this machine stays here!”. 

Our hard launch of the LAX Ball Dr. Pro was at the IMLCA convention held in Baltimore, MA in December 2012.  We were met with overwhelming success. With many schools and Universities purchasing the LAX Ball Dr. Pro. We now have 100’s programs using the LAX Ball Dr. Pro.

• What is the cost?
  

The Cost of a LAX Ball Dr. Pro is only  $350.00. 

• How fast can a program see a return on investment?
  

The return on investment (ROI) can range from 1 day to a season.  Most schools and organizations average a ROI in a about month or less.  The LAX Ball DR Pro comes with one extra Abrasive Disc, which is the only component that will need to be replaced.  One disc will refurbish between 1,000-1,5000 Lacrosse Balls.  As a result the initial purchase of the LAX Ball Dr. Pro will refurbish up to 3,000 balls saving a school or club between $4,500-6,000.  We also provide a 3 pack of replacement abrasive discs on our website (www.thelaxdr.com). 

• How long does it take for a lacrosse ball to be refurbished?
  

The LAX Ball Dr. Pro. has sophisticated  technology that will refurbish up to 10 balls at a time and can take as little as 60 seconds and as long as 3 minutes to refurbish a ball.  Of course the slicker the ball the longer it will take to refurbish.  We found that lacrosse balls that take longer than 3 minutes in the LAX Ball Dr Pro are really passed the point of no return and we recommend throwing them away.  It is important to note that about 98% of lacrosse balls can be refurbished.  The LAX Ball Dr. Pro only removed about .025mm off the surface of the ball, therefore allowing you to refurbish a ball up to 30 times and still be within NOCSAE specifications.

• How often do you need to refurbish a lacrosse ball?

The answer is not as easy as you would think.  How quickly a lacrosse ball becomes slick depends on 3 factors.  

   1. UV light exposure
   2. If you are playing/practicing on artificial turf or grass.
   3. Friction caused from Passing and Shooting

The more you play outside the sun’s UV light will cause the outer layer of the ball to degrade and become slick.

If you play and/or practice on artificial turf the lacrosse ball will be come slicker faster because the friction and heat from turf.  This can cause the ball to be slick 50% faster than on grass.

Finally and perhaps what affects the slickness of a lacrosse ball the most is the ball striking against nylon netting.  As a result both passing and shooting are the largest contributor to the slickness of a lacrosse ball.  What actually happens is during a pass or shot as the ball strikes against the net it creates friction which has a buffing like affect on the ball making it slick over time. So the faster you pass and shoot the faster the ball will become slicker.  This is why you need to refurbish lacrosse balls more often at the higher levels of play.

We have found that at most College levels lacrosse balls need to be refurbished once per week when playing/practicing on turf and every 2 weeks if they play/practice on grass.  

Most high school programs will need to refurbish their lacrosse balls between 2-4 weeks and at the youth programs between 3-6 weeks.  The LAX Dr. LLC recommend a regular maintenance program to keep the lacrosse balls in top performance. This will improve the quality of your practices and better prepare your players for game time.

• Can the LAX Ball Dr. Pro work for girls lacrosse balls? 
  

The answer is yes.  Through our research we found that colored lacrosse ball like the women’s yellow lacrosse balls actually become slicker faster than the white lacrosse balls.  This is because the UV light is reflected more on a white ball while colorized lacrosse balls absorb the UV light more.  There is also the same friction caused in passing and shooting which is the major contributing factor in causing slick lacrosse balls.  

Another questions we get is, “Does the refurbished ball get slicker faster than a new ball?”  The answer is no.  After refurbishing a lacrosse ball in the LAX Ball Dr. Pro it comes out just like a new ball and lasts as long as a new ball lasts before becoming slick.  

The importance of practicing with like new balls means that boys don’t have to compensate for a slick ball sliding out of the stick and shooting or passing high.  They can practice with the same quality of ball as they play with in a game.
